Hans Schardt (born June 18, 1858 in Basel , † February 3, 1931 in Zurich ) was a Swiss geologist . He was a professor at the University of Neuchâtel and at the ETH and the University of Zurich .

Schardt first went to Yverdon to become a pharmacist and first studied pharmacy and for a degree as a high school teacher with the degree in 1883. He then studied geology at the University of Geneva with a doctorate in 1884 (Etudes géologiques sur le Pays-d'Enhaut vaudois). From 1883 he taught natural sciences and geography at the Collège in Montreux . In 1891 he completed his habilitation in Lausanne and also studied in Heidelberg. In 1897 he became a full professor at the Neuchâtel Academy (from 1909 university), where he founded the Geological Institute. From 1911 he was a full professor at the ETH and the University of Zurich as successor to Albert Heim . He retired in 1928.

In an essay from 1893 and in one from 1898, he found thrusts in the foothills of western Switzerland (Jura rock over flysch from the Tertiary), and indeed he understood the entire foothills to have been caused by thrust. This contributed significantly to the implementation of the ceiling theory around 1903 by showing that it did not only occur in the Glarus thrust . He was also active as an applied geologist (including the Simplon Tunnel , Wäggitalwerk ).

He was also active as a mountaineer until shortly before his death from a stroke. He was a co-author of the Geographical Lexicon of Switzerland .
