Hans Schell

Hans Schell (born November 1, 1905 in Schwäbisch Hall , † April 26, 1985 in Gerlingen near Stuttgart ) was a German crop and seed scientist.

Schell, the son of an estate director, studied agriculture in Hohenheim from 1923 to 1926, then worked for several years in seed breeding companies and received his doctorate in 1932 at the University of Gießen with a dissertation on spring barley. Until 1938 he worked as a scientific assistant or as a senior assistant at the Institute for Plant Cultivation and Plant Breeding at the University of Giessen. In the meantime, he worked in 1935 as an agricultural expert in the agricultural meteorological department at the Reich Weather Service in Berlin. In 1939 he completed his habilitation in Gießen with the text " The performance limit of economic measures on Lahntalwiesen ". From 1940 to 1945 he was professor and director of the Institute for Plant Cultivation and Plant Breeding of the Prussian Experimental and Research Centers in Landsberg (Warthe) .

From 1948 to 1955 Schell was head of the seed cultivation department at the Württemberg Agricultural Central Cooperative in Stuttgart. In 1955 he was appointed head of department and later as head of the State Plant Breeding Institute at the Institute for Plant Cultivation and Plant Breeding at the Hohenheim Agricultural University . Until his retirement in 1968, he played a key role in the organizational reorganization of German plant breeding in this role and at the same time as managing director of the Association of Southwest German Plant Breeders.
