Hans Schellnhuber (born June 21, 1887 in Ortenburg ; † May 25, 1968 at Ortenburg Castle ) was a German administrator of Ortenburg Castle , editor of the Ortenburger Wochenblatt and local history researcher .

Life

Hans Schellnhuber was born on June 21, 1887 in Ortenburg , Lower Bavaria . In 1910 he entered the service of the Counts of Ortenburg , who resided in Tambach in Franconia . Schellnhuber took over the position of castle administrator for the ancestral castle Alt-Ortenburg . He then moved into his official residence in the castle.

At the start of his service, Ortenburg Castle was already in a ruinous state. Schellnhuber did not limit himself to the maintenance of the existing building, but also renovated parts of the palace complex on his own. Despite the two world wars, work on the castle continued to progress. During the Second World War, numerous objects from museums and libraries were housed in the vacant rooms. In 1944, for example, the collections of the Palatinate State Trade Institute and the Volksmuseum Kaiserslautern, the Palatina Library (today part of the Palatinate Library in Kaiserslautern ) and, towards the end of the war, to protect against air raids, the holdings of the Munich City Museum and the University Library of Munich found shelter in the palace. Securing and maintaining all of these holdings was the sole responsibility of Hans Schellnhuber. In the last days of the World War he also succeeded in protecting the collections from looting. Some of these holdings remained in the castle and thus under his care until the 1960s.

In addition to his duties as castle administrator, Schellnhuber spent decades researching the history of the former imperial county of Ortenburg .

On May 12, 1950, Schellnhuber was awarded honorary citizenship by the municipality of Ortenburg for his services to the history of Ortenburg and the castle. On December 18, 1960, he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon for his services to the preservation of cultural assets in World War II and his work on the history of the East Bavarian region . Schellnhuber died on May 25, 1968 at Ortenburg Castle.
