Hans Schmid (pilot)
Hans Schmid (born December 5, 1879 in Ebnat , † October 14, 1911 in Bern ) was a Swiss aviation pioneer. He was the first Swiss man to have a fatal accident while flying.
Life
Schmid was an innkeeper at the Sternen restaurant in Wettingen . In 1910 he acquired in Douzy in the Ardennes be aircraft certification and undertook from the summer of 1910 with a biplane first flight tests on the Klosterfeld in Wettingen. He first flew with passengers in July 1911 and on July 30, 1911 he was one of the most successful pilots at an air show in Dübendorf . At a show flying in Bern, which was to take place from October 14th to 16th, Schmid competed with a monoplane. On the first day of the show, he managed the longest flight time among five participants with 30 minutes and 55 seconds. On his second flight on the same day, his plane got problems after a flight time of about 2 minutes, so that his monoplane crashed and Schmid buried under himself. He could only be recovered dead from the plane wreck.
Hans Schmid was married and had five children.
