Hans Ulrich Zellweger

Hans Ulrich Zellweger (born June 19, 1909 in Lugano ; † February 24, 1990 in Iowa City , Iowa ) was a Swiss-American pediatrician and the first person to describe the Zellweger syndrome, which was later named after him .

biography

Zellweger studied in Zurich , Hamburg , Berlin and Rome . He received his doctorate in Zurich in 1934 and then worked in Lucerne . From 1937 to 1939 he worked with Albert Schweitzer in his hospital in Lambaréné . After that, Zellweger was Guido Fanconi 's assistant at the Children's Hospital in Zurich . In 1951, Zellweger became professor of paediatrics at the American University in Beirut . In 1959 he became professor of paediatrics at the University of Iowa in Iowa City , where he founded a laboratory for clinical cytogenetics in 1960 and a clinic for neuromuscular diseases in 1962. He was also head of the medical genetics department. After his retirement in 1977 he headed a human genetic program for the state of Iowa until 1980 .

The Zellweger syndrome , which he first described in 1964, is named after Zellweger .
