Hans Wiesmeth

Hans Wiesmeth (born February 11, 1950 in Vilseck ) is a German economist . He has been President of the Saxon Academy of Sciences since January 1, 2016 .

Live and act

After studying mathematics and physics at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg between 1970 and 1975, Wiesmeth worked as an assistant at the Socio-Economic Institute at the University of Hamburg . There he received his doctorate in 1979 on the subject of fixed price equilibria and non-tâtonnement processes . Just one year later , he also completed his habilitation in economics at Hamburg University . In 1981 he was appointed professor for economic theory at the University of Bonn . In 1992 he moved to the Technical University of Dresden , where he took over the professorship for economics, in particular for allocation theory . His main research interests are general equilibrium theory, with particular emphasis on environmental economics and the theory of public goods. From 1993 to 2000 he held the position of Vice Rector for Science there. From 2003 to 2005, in addition to his professorship at the TU Dresden, he headed the economics department of the Dresden International University (DIU). From 2005 to March 2010 he was rector of the Leipzig Graduate School of Management, where he also took over the professorship for applied economic theory. He then served as President of the DIU from 2010 to 2014.

Since 2004 he has been a full member of the technical science class of the Saxon Academy of Sciences . After serving as Vice President from 2012, he was elected as the successor to Pirmin Stekeler-Weithofer as President of the Academy on October 9, 2015 . He took office on January 1, 2016.
