Hanstholm Fyr is the oldest Danish lighthouse on the west coast of Jutland . The 23-meter-high, octagonal lighthouse was built in 1843 on the highest point of Hanstholm and, with a fire height of 65 meters, is Denmark's highest beacon.
history
A first lighthouse was built in 1842 by the city council member , master mason and captain G. N. Sibbern and the architect Georg Nielsen Holgreen. After installing the beacon, it was discovered in October 1842 that the tower could not support the heavy optics. The cause was insufficient wall thickness, for which Sibbern cited the ambiguous building contract as an explanation. The architect Holgreen, who was jointly responsible, could not cope with the failure and took his own life on April 12, 1843.
Although Sibbern declined any responsibility, he agreed to demolish the tower and build a new lighthouse at his own expense. In cooperation with the architect Jens Poulsen Jacobsen, a 20-meter-high, octagonal tower was built on the same site, which went into operation on December 15, 1843 as the first Danish lighthouse on the North Sea coast.
In 1889 the tower was raised to 23 meters and equipped with an electric arc lamp and two fog horns . To drive the generators , steam engines were used, which were replaced by three diesel engines in 1925 . The fog horns were in operation until 1997 and a radio beacon was in operation from 1925 to 1993.
The lighthouse, automated in 1970, can be visited all year round. From the viewing platform, which is 65 meters above sea level, you have a fantastic view of Hanstholm and the open sea. A tourist information office was opened in the former lighthouse keeper's house in summer 2011 .
