Haplotaxodon ( Gr .: haploos = single + taxis = arrangement + odous = tooth) is a genus of African cichlids (Cichlidae), which occurs with two species endemic to the East African Lake Tanganyika .

features

Haplotaxodon species reach lengths of 16 to 26 cm. Your body is streamlined and heavily flattened on the sides. The head is relatively small, the eyes very large. The mouth is almost vertical. The front teeth of both jaws are level with the top of the eyes. The pharyngeal teeth are conical, small and very pointed. The number of gill rakes on the lower half of the first gill arch is 20 to 29. The fish are light green-yellow in color and covered by small, glittering comb scales. Males show yellowish and slightly bluish shimmering horizontal stripes on the underside of the head. Females are paler.

Way of life

Haplotaxodon species live as school-forming fish in open water and feed on small zooplankton . They are mouth brooders and seek to reproduce near the shore.
