Harald Friedrich (physicist)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Harald Friedrich (born May 19, 1947 in Berlin ; † January 29, 2017 ) was a German physicist who dealt with theoretical atomic physics .

Career

Friedrich grew up in Australia, studied physics at the University of Kiel and the University of Freiburg . He received his doctorate in 1975 at the University of Münster with a thesis on the microscopic description of the scattering of light and medium-weight nuclei and was a post-doctoral student at the University of Oxford . In 1980 he completed his habilitation at the University of Münster and was a Heisenberg fellow at Caltech from 1981 to 1983 . He taught at the universities of Munich and Tübingen before becoming professor at the Technical University of Munich in 1987 .

Among other things, he was visiting scientist at the Institute for Theoretical Atomic Physics of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics and at the Australian National University in Canberra .

Friedrich initially dealt with theoretical nuclear physics before switching to atomic physics. Here he has dealt - partly with his doctoral student Dieter Wintgen - with quantum chaos phenomena in highly excited atoms and their semiclassical treatment since the 1980s . He is also known from a textbook on theoretical atomic physics.
