Harald Mercenary

Harald Söldner (born March 21, 1939 ; † October 9, 2003 ) was a football player in the GDR upper league . In this top division of the GDR football association , he played for Motor / Sachsenring Zwickau . He won the GDR soccer cup in 1967 .

Soccer career

Söldner made a name for himself as early as 1962 when, as a 23-year-old player-coach, he led the soccer team of the small Dynamo sports club in Klingenthal into the district league , the top division of the GDR district of Karl-Marx-Stadt . In the 1963/64 season he played for ISG Geyer, who was also represented in the Karl-Marx-Stadt district league .

At the beginning of the football season 1964/65, the now 25-year-old mercenary joined the upper division BSG Motor Zwickau. He got a job as a fitter at the BSG carrier company VEB Sachsenring and was used as a defender in the league team from the first match day on. He had 19 point games by the end of the season. In all of the league seasons he has completed, Mercenaries have always been part of the team. He was part of the Zwickau squad that won the GDR soccer cup for the second time on April 30, 1967 after a 3-0 win over Hansa Rostock. In this game he was the right defender on the field. It was Söldner's only title win with the Zwickauers, who renamed themselves Sachsenring Zwickau in 1968. As a further success, he was able to book third place in the league season 1966/67. He completed his last first division season in 1969/70. Mainly playing as a central defender, he was used again in 23 of 26 possible point games. After completing his senior league career, he had played 126 of the Zwickau's 157 league games within six years and scored five goals as a defender. He also played the two games for the European Cup Winners' Cup of the 1967/68 season against Torpedo Moscow (0-0, 0-1).

In the summer of 1970, at the age of 31, Mercenary returned to Geyer, where he finally ended his football career with the ISG.
