Harmen Jansen Knickerbocker
Harmen Jansen Knickerbocker (* around 1650 in Olst-Wijhe Overijssel , Netherlands ; † around 1720 in Nieuw Amsterdam ; also Harmen Jansen van Wijhe ) was a Dutch colonist near Albany , USA.
Life
Before 1683 he settled near what is now Albany; In 1704 he bought a quarter of the agricultural land in Dutchess County through Harnie Gansevoort , and in 1688 he had this property certified by the first mayor of Albany, Pieter Schuyler , in the name of Nickerbocker.
After the death of Harmen Jansen Knickerbocker, Schuyler shared seven of the 13 parcels in the upper quarter of this basic letter with seven children of Knickerbocker.
The oldest child was Johannes Harmensen, who received a basic letter from the Common Council of the City of Albany for 50 acres (20,000 m²) of meadow and a few hectares of unwetted land north of Albany, on the south bank of the Schaghticoke torrent .
This property on Schaghticoke Creek was owned by the son of Johannes Harmensen, Johannes Harmensen (1723-1802) a colonel in the army of the US independence movement , and his son, Herman Knickerbocker (1779-1855), a lawyer, member of the Federalist Party member of Parliament from 1809 to 1811 and 1816 City Councilor in the New York Assembly . This Herman Knickerbocker inspired Washington Irving to the figure Diedrich Knickerbocker in his History of New York , 1809. With this work Knickerbocker became synonymous with the first Dutch settlers in New York and their descendants.
A son of Herman Knickerbocker (1779-1855), David Buel Knickerbacker (1833-1894), studied at Trinity College in Connecticut in 1853 , was rector of Minneapolis and in 1883 was Episcopal Bishop of Indiana .
