Harold Winter

Harold Winter (born December 9, 1887 in Frankfurt am Main , † October 14, 1969 in Oberursel ) was a German sculptor and member of the Kronberg painters' colony .

Life

Harold Winter was born on December 9, 1887 in Frankfurt am Main . His father Heinrich Winter was a member of the Kronberg painters' colony, his younger brother Rolf Winter became a painter. After attending grammar school, which he left with the lower prima, he first began an apprenticeship as a carpenter and then studied for three and a half years at the Städelsche Kunstinstitut in Frankfurt am Main, first under Professor Hausmann, then under Professor Kowarzik, who became famous for his badges. In 1908 he went to Paris for seven months at the Académie Ránson , where Aristide Maillol also taught. After a short stay in Berlin, winter 1912 settled in Oberursel as a freelance sculptor and lived here until his death in 1969. During the First World War 1914–1918 he served in the military.

He preferred to work directly from the block, not only in stone, but also in wood, using paint and bronze at the same time. The majority of his works belonged to the round sculpture. He particularly excelled as a portrait and animal sculptor, but also in life-size figurative works. He saw his artistic goal in the "intimate merging of the intimate experience of nature with an honest, clear design from the respective material".

Honors

The Gebrüder-Winter-Straße in Oberursel (Taunus) was named after the brothers Harold and Rolf Winter.

Works

Goethe plaque of the city ​​of Frankfurt am Main in 1932, memorial plaque for the Reich Freiherr Heinrich Friedrich Karl von und zum Stein at the Paulskirche (1931) and the youth hostel fountain in the Haus der Jugend in Frankfurt. In Oberursel he created the Ursula Fountain (1962) on the market square, the sandstone relief on the former Ratskeller and the memorial for the murdered Sergeant Homm in the old cemetery.
