The Harriet Hollister Spencer State Recreation Area (also: Harriet Hollister Spencer Memorial Recreation Area ) is a state park in the parish of Canadice in Ontario County , New York , United States. The park covers an area of 1,550 acres (6.27 km²) and is located 6 mi (9.7 km) south of Honeoye on Canadice Hill Road .

history

The State Recreation Area was donated by Harriet Hollister Spencer , a Rochester horticulturist , rose expert, and civic woman who bequeathed 679 acres to the state after her death in 1962.

The state acquired some adjacent land from The Nature Conservancy in the 2000s , doubling the park area. Another acquisition in 2014 brought the park to its current size.

geography

The park lies north of the summit of Canadice Hill and borders directly on the Honeoye Inlet Wildlife Management Area to the east . To the west is the Hemlock Canadice State Forest a short distance away . The area is relatively high, which means that relatively more snow can be expected in winter. The Rochester Cross Country Ski Foundation maintains 16 mi (26 km) of ski trails.

Freetime activities

In many places the park offers views over the surrounding area to Honeoye Lake . There is a picnic pavilion and there are many opportunities for hiking, cross-country skiing, cycling and hunting.
