Wonder Lake State Park is a state park in the parish of Patterson in Putnam County , New York , United States. The park covers 1145 acres (436 hectares )

history

The Wonder Lake was created in the 1930s. At the time, the land belonged to AL Cushman , the owner of a bakery chain in New York City . The lake has an area of ​​30 acres (12 hectares). The smaller Laurel Pond (3 acres, 1.2 ha) was dammed by a dam.

Wonder Lake State Park originated from the summer estate of television star Elizabeth Montgomery , who lived there until her death in 1995.

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation acquired the 794 acre property in November 1998 with funding from the Clean Water / Clean Air Bond Act . In 2006 an additional 106 acres (42 ha) were acquired. and another acquisition in 2010 enlarged the park to its current size. There has only been public access to the park since 2006.

The park is located in the hilly area around Bare Hill (313 m above sea level ). To the west it is bounded by the Stump Pond Stream and Interstate 84 (east) . Wonder Lake State Park has nine miles of hiking trails and the Highlands Trail , a long distance hiking trail, passes Laurel Pond and Wonder Lake .

the park also serves as a water protection area for the Great Swamp Watershed and as a link to other public areas.
