Harry Patrick Cleaver (born September 18, 1879 in Walworth , † 1953 ) was an English football player .

Career

Cleaver played from 1900 as a center forward at Desborough Town in the Northamptonshire League , allegedly he was already active for the club at an earlier point in time. With the team he won the league championship in 1901 and 1902. The two-footed attacker scored 68 goals across all competitions in the 1901/02 season and had already scored a further 26 goals in the 1902/03 season by mid-October 1902. That was reason enough for Manchester United to sign the player for a £ 20 transfer fee, especially as United's new center forward Jack Peddie failed to live up to expectations at the start of the season.

Cleaver was first used in the reserve team and was thereby successful in November 1902 in victories against the Manchester City reserves , against the Oswaldtwistle Rovers and against Rossendale United as a goalscorer. After he had scored two goals in another reserve game against Nelson FC at the end of March , he came on April 4, 1903 as a center forward for his only use for United's first team in the Football League Second Division . Cleaver formed the storm line with Alf Schofield , Tommy Morrison , Peddie and Lawrence Smith , but remained in the 4-0 home win against Burnley FC despite several good chances but without his own goals. The Manchester Evening News said: “Cleaver has played many good games for the reserves and the officials were perfectly entitled to test him, but he was hopelessly inferior. Perhaps it was one of his bad days, and he deserves credit that it was his first appearance in a game of any importance and that he was facing veteran Taylor . If he gets rid of his weight, he can prove to be a useful member of the eleven. "

At the end of the season, Cleaver left the club and is said to have played in the sequence for Darlington FC in the Northern League .
