Harry Emmery

Harry Emmery (* 1951 ) is a Dutch jazz bassist and composer.

Emmery began studying classical double bass at the Rotterdam Conservatory at the age of 12. He learned the cello, double bass and bass guitar. At first he played in bands like that of the singer Peter Blanker before he switched to jazz. Here he developed a new technique on the double bass, "thumbing". For many years he played as a studio musician and in big bands such as the “Skymasters”, the VARA dance orchestra and in the 1980s at the invitation of Rogier van Otterloo with the Metropole Orkest . Since 1991 he has mainly been working freelance, and thanks to frequent appearances he has developed into a kind of house bass player at the North Sea Jazz Festival . In the 1990s he also accompanied the singer Lisa Boray, played in the trios of Dolf de Vries and Rob Agerbeek and in the Louis van Dijk Superband . He also works as a producer, wrote film music and is a lecturer at the Utrecht University of Music .

In the course of his long career he has accompanied musicians such as Chet Baker , Johnny Griffin , Mel Lewis , Theo Jörgensmann , Archie Shepp , Freddie Hubbard , Duke Jordan , Hod O'Brien and Ann Burton .
