Harry Gosling

Harry Gosling (* 9. June 1861 in Lambeth , † 24. October 1930 ) was a British politician of the Labor Party , among others 1923-1930 Member of Parliament ( House of Commons ) and 1924 both Paymaster General ( Paymaster General ) as Transport Minister (Minister of Transport) was.

Life

Gosling was originally a member of the London Progressive Party and from 1898 to 1925 was a member of the London County Council (LCC), in which he initially represented St George in the East and then from 1919 Kennington. In 1916 he succeeded James Andrew Seddon as President of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), the umbrella organization of the trade unions , and held this office until he was replaced by John Hill in 1917. At the same time, he and William Whitefield dissolved Charles Ammon and Ernest Bevin in 1916 as TUC representative at the American Federation of Labor (AFL). Both of them held this position until they were replaced by John Hill and Arthur Hayday in 1917. In 1922 he took over the post of national secretary for waterways of the newly established transport workers 'union TGWU (Transport and General Workers' Union) and remained in this position until his death in 1930, whereupon Dan W. Milford succeeded him. As National Secretary, he was a close collaborator of Ernest Bevin, who was Secretary General of the TGWU between 1922 and 1945.

In a by the death of former MPs Charles James Mathew made necessary by-election Gosling was in the constituency on February 8, 1923 Stepney Whitechapel and St George's first time as a member of the lower house ( House of Commons ) elected and was this October until his death on 24 1930 on.

On January 23, 1924 Gosling was supported by Prime Minister Ramsay MacDonald to the Minister of Transport (Transport Minister of) appointed and held this position until the end of MacDonald's term of office on November 3, 1924. At the same time he was on 2 May 1924 Paymaster General ( Paymaster General ) . After his death, JH Hall was elected a member of the House of Commons.
