Harry Samuels

Harry Samuels (born November 18, 1893 in Liverpool , † 1976 ) was a British lawyer.

Life and activity

Samuels was a son of the jeweler Morris Samuels and his wife Rose, b. Hyams. He attended Liverpool College from 1907 to 1912 . He then studied law at Wadham College, Oxford University, where he earned a master's degree (with honors ). In 1923 he was admitted as a barrister -at-law in London. His focus was on business law , labor law and trade union law.

Since the 1920s, Samuels also excelled by publishing numerous books on legal topics. He was also a contributor to the Encyclopedia Britannica .

As a lawyer, Samuels served on numerous committees: He was a member of the Islington and East London Rent Ribunal (since 1946 as chairman), the Confectionery and Food Preserving Wages Committee and the Consultative Committee on Kosher Meat Prices.

Due to his position as a well-known Jew in public life in Great Britain, at the end of the 1930s Samuels was targeted by the police forces of National Socialist Germany, who classified him as an important target: In the spring of 1940, the Reich Security Main Office in Berlin put him on the special wanted list GB , a directory of people , which the Nazi surveillance apparatus regarded as particularly dangerous or important, which is why they should be located and arrested with special priority by the occupying forces following special SS units in the event of a successful invasion and occupation of the British Isles by the Wehrmacht.

Samuels was a member of the London Reform Club . In 1958 he was awarded the Order of the British Empire .

Samuels had been married to Celine Aronowitz since September 11, 1918. From the marriage the son Michael and the daughter Miriam, who became known as an actress under the name Miriam Karlin , emerged.
