Harry James Smith (born July 30, 1888 in New York , † November 1961 ) was an American long-distance runner .
Harry Smith was born the descendant of Irish immigrants in the Bronx , New York . His sporting interest was running. In 1912 he won a ten mile race hosted by the Amateur Athletic Union . At the Boston Marathon in 1912 , he finished 10th with a time of 2:27:46 h. His performance earned him an invitation to the 1912 Olympic Games in Stockholm . At the Olympic marathon he finished 17th with a time of 2: 52: 53.8 hours.
Also in 1912 he and the Finn Hannes Kolehmainen were US champions over 10,000 m. Harry Smith participated in the Boston Marathon ten times in a row from 1912. His best placement was third in 1913 .
Harry Smith was married to Elizabeth Poulis, a Greek dancer. With her he had five daughters. He worked as a sports columnist for the New York Daily Tribune . In the 1930s, Smith was the victim of a road traffic accident and an escape route . He suffered permanent damage to his leg.
His daughter Helen married the wrestler Stu Hart . Smith's granddaughter Diana Hart wrote the book Under the Mat in 2001, the fourth chapter of which, entitled Roots, describes the family history, in particular the story of her grandparents Elizabeth and Harry Smith.
