history

First mentioned in 1261 as platea cervi , the name of Hartestrasse came from a Rostock councilor family named Hart (Low German for stag). The fact that it was named after a patrician family proves its high status within the medieval Rostock, since mostly only the streets leading to the harbor like the Koßfelderstraße bore the names of families. In fact, Hartestrasse is the only street in what was once Rostock's old town , ie the part of town between Grubenstrasse and the eastern city wall, whose names come from people. Accordingly, it was built with stately gabled houses, all of which were destroyed during the great city fire of 1677 . In the course of a hesitant reconstruction, it was rebuilt with baroque and classicist houses. Hartestrasse survived the four-night bombardment of the British Air Force comparatively lightly, so that there is still a considerable number of historical buildings.

The houses at Hartestrasse 8 and 9 are simple baroque houses from the end of the 18th century. At number 27 you will find a former warehouse converted for residential purposes in the classicism style, and Hartestrasse 26, also classicist, has a remarkable facade with pilasters and triangular gables. Hartestrasse is of medium importance for motor traffic.
