Hartmann from St. Gallen

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hartmann (* before 895; † September 21, 925 ) was abbot of the Benedictine monastery of St. Gallen from 922 to 925 .

Term of office

Hartmann was elected abbot in 922. He succeeded Abbot Solomon after a year of interregnum . As early as 895 he appeared in the monk directory as a deacon . In 897 he appeared as a writer of documents, from 910 to 912 four times as Camerarius and in 920 as Praepositus . His time as abbot is only documented in a document that is imprecisely dated. His term of office is recorded as three years and four months in an abbot list.

Act

Ekkehart, who later became the abbot and important chronicler of the monastery, reported that Hartmann took care of the monastic and scientific life in the monastery. He devoted particular care to school and choral singing. However, he neglected the administration of the monastery property, so that the abbey was damaged.

He is considered to be the author of a lost work on the history of his time, while the hymns by an author of the same name are not likely to come from Hartmann von St. Gallen.
