Stockbridge is a city in Henry County in the US state of Georgia with 25,636 inhabitants (as of 2010).

geography

Stockbridge is about 5 km northwest of McDonough and about 20 km southeast of Atlanta .

history

A small settlement already existed in 1829. That year the Old Stockbridge Concord Methodist Church was founded. The first post office was opened in 1847. It is named after a well-known teacher in the community, Professor Stockbridge . The railroad reached Stockbridge in 1881 when the Southern Railroad built a line from Macon to Atlanta. Stockbridge in 1895 only to Town and on August 6, 1920. City appointed.

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census, the then 25,636 inhabitants were distributed over 9,499 inhabited households, which gives an average of 2.70 people per household. There are a total of 10,312 households.

68.8% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring) with an average size of 3.29 people. Children under the age of 18 lived in 45.6% of all households and persons aged 65 or over in 13.6% of all households.

33.3% of the population were younger than 20 years old, 30.3% were 20 to 39 years old, 26.7% were 40 to 59 years old, and 9.7% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 32 years. 46.4% of the population were male and 53.6% were female.

28.8% of the population identified themselves as whites , 55.7% as African American , 0.3% as Indians and 7.6% as Asian Americans . 3.9% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 3.7% to several ethnic groups. 9.5% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .

The average annual income per household was 54,769 USD , while 15.9% of the population lived below the poverty line.

Attractions

In 1980 the Walden-Turner House was entered on the National Register of Historic Places .

Stockbridge is crossed by Interstates 75 and 675 , US Highway 23 and Georgia State Route 138 . The nearest airport is Atlanta Airport (around 15 km northwest).
