Engilbert II of St. Gallen
Engilbert († August 13, 934 ) was abbot of the Benedictine monastery of St. Gallen from 925 to 933.
Life
Engilbert cannot be clearly identified before his term of office, as several monks with this name are mentioned in the profession book of St. Gallen and in the fraternization books of Pfäfers and Reichenau . Between 895 and 914 the name Engilbert is given for two monks. The younger of the two should have been the future abbot. With that, Engilbert was probably a subdeacon in 895. It is also very likely that he wrote four documents between 890 and 896. Possibly he was Portarius , mentioned as such in the document of July 2, 898. His election as abbot took place shortly after September 21, 925. He was first mentioned in his office on May 26, 926. King Heinrich recognized his election and on November 4, 926 sent Engilbert a confirmation of his immunity, election and election Inquisition law.
Act
While Engilbert was in office, was made a living endangering Hungarian invasion . It was only thanks to his preventive actions that the monastery and its residents could be saved from worse. So he had the library on the Reichenau brought to safety and two castles built to protect the residents. The old people and children were taken to the moated castle in Lake Constance under his direction . With his brothers he moved into a paved place on the Sitter. The legend of St. Wiborada plays before and during this Hungarian invasion.
