The Langhofer Island is a small and icy island before Eights Coast of the West Antarctic Ellsworthlands . It is located 800 m east of McNamara Island on the northern edge of the Abbot Ice Shelf . A special feature of this island is a rocky outcrop at its southern end.
The US icebreaker USS Glacier anchored off the island on February 11, 1961. Scientists on board collected geological and botanical samples from the said ledge. The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named them in 1968 after the American topography engineer Joel Henry Langhofer (1915-2000) from the United States Geological Survey , who was part of the crew on the USS Glacier and who had made position determinations of geographic objects in this area.
