The Hartmannspital is a non-profit Viennese hospital run by the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Love in Nikolsdorfer Gasse in the 5th district of Margareten . The first successful kidney transplant on a dog was carried out here in 1902. Since 2017 the hospital has merged with the St. Elisabeth Hospital in Vienna to form the Franziskus Spital . The Hartmannspital is now operated under the Franziskus Spital Margareten brand , the St. Elisabeth Hospital under the Franziskus Spital Landstrasse brand.

history

Inner courtyard wing

After the establishment of the religious order in 1857 by Cardinal Joseph Othmar von Rauscher in the Wiedner Hospital , these two houses were acquired on the so-called Hartmann's grounds, in which they built the monastery and the hospital.

Between 1888 and 1891, a new hospital with 80 beds was built according to plans by Hofbauinspektor Seitschek and city architect Ernst Krombholz.

In 1891 the surgeon Emerich Ullmann, born in Pécs , took over the surgical department of the Hartmann Hospital. In addition to his work as a primary physician, he conducted animal experiments here, initially with the transplantation of intestinal sections and later also kidneys . In these attempts he possibly also succeeded in the first direct heart massage. At the scientific meeting in the Society of Doctors on March 7, 1902, he was able to present a dog to which he had successfully transplanted a kidney.

In 1947, the municipal department 16, which was responsible at the time, approved the status of an affiliated hospital and in 1959 the Viennese provincial government issued a ruling that the hospital was not for profit.

Also in 1979, the name Hartmannspital , which had previously been in use due to the address Hartmanngasse 7, was approved by the health authorities instead of the previous name Klosterspital .

An extension built in 1993 enabled the sick room and the X-ray institute to be relocated from the old building and a physical department and an intensive care unit to be set up.
