Hartmut Westphal

Hartmut Westphal (* 1939 in Berlin ) is a German composer , music processor, arranger and musicologist .

Live and act

Westphal studied composition and conducting as well as musicology and philosophy at the Free University of Berlin at the Berlin University of Music and Performing Arts . He has worked as a freelance composer, music processor, arranger and musicologist since 1973 .

The spectrum of his activities in the field of serious music includes chamber music and experimental live electronic music (1970–1978 he was a member of the No Set Ensemble) as well as intermedia projects, compositions and arrangements for large orchestras.

In the field of popular music, he writes compositions and arrangements for radio orchestras for feature and television films, musicals and revues (e.g. for the Theater des Westens Berlin, Friedrichstadt-Palast Berlin), record arrangements for well-known performers, music for children and print arrangements for music publishers.

Teaching activities

Westphal held advanced training seminars for music teachers at the Berlin University of the Arts as well as composition seminars for schoolchildren and lectures at various universities. Since 1982 he has been appointed expert for arbitration proceedings by GEMA and has been working as a musicological expert and court-appointed expert since 1985 .
