Hartmut Witte (born October 29, 1952 in Oldenburg ) is a German art historian and photographer .

Life

Hartmut Witte was born on October 29, 1952 in the Oldenburg Haareneschviertel. After finishing school, he studied at the art college in Bremen under Karl Heinrich Greune (painting) and Gerhart Schreiter (sculpture). From 1973 Witte continued his painting studies at the University of Kassel with Kurt Haug. From 1973 he studied art history in Göttingen, among others with Thomas W. Gaehtgens , Karl Arndt and Herwarth Röttgen .

From 1978 to 1984 Witte worked for the Pädagogische Aktion eV in Munich in cultural and play education. After that he was editor of the youth magazine Menschenskinder until 1990 and started numerous projects in the field of reading promotion for the working group for youth literature, for the German reading society and for the Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels . From 1988 to 1994 he headed the German branch of the Zytglogge publishing house in Bern and worked as an editor for publications in the field of fiction and non-fiction. In 1995 he returned to the fine arts and opened his own gallery in Bad Honnef with exhibitions of classical modernism , German impressionism and contemporary art. Since then, his art-historical focus has been on German art from the 1950s to 1980s, in the preparation of catalog raisonnés by Friederich Werthmann , Reinhold Koehler and Rudolf Vombek .

Witte has curated numerous exhibitions including those on art in construction (graphics, painting, objects), watercolors and drawings of the 20th century, graphics of the 20th century, Max Liebermann (graphics), Lovis Corinth (painting and graphics), Max Slevogt (graphics ), Leonard Cohen on his 65th birthday (photography and documents), Rudolf Vombek (graphics), Reinhold Koehler (can prints) and in 2017 the extensive exhibition "Steel. Poetry. Dynamics" - Friederich Werthmann on his 90th birthday (Märkisches Museum Witten).

During his art studies he mainly made drawings, from 1972 almost exclusively landscapes. During a stay in Monemvasia (Greece) in 1977/1978 he began with black and white photography, from 1993 color became the main theme of Hartmut Witte's photography.
