Since his second promotion to komusubi in March 2007 tournament Ama fighting constant in the sanyaku -Rängen. In the Kyūshū Basho in 2008 he reached with a record of 13-2 a jump-off to win the tournament against Hakuhō , which he lost. After this tournament he was named Ōzeki , the second highest rank in sumo, and changed his ring name from Ama to Harumafuji. At the Natsu Basho in 2009 he reached a playoff against Hakuhō again with a record of 14-1. This time he was able to defeat Hakuhō and won his first tournament in the Makuuchi division. He won his second tournament in July 2011. In July 2012, he faced Hakuhō on the last day. Both fighters had a flawless record of 14 victories up to this point. Harumafuji defeated his opponent with Yorikiri and was able to win his third tournament. Also in September 2012, Harumafuji finished 15-0 with two wins ahead of his pursuers Hakuhō, whom he was able to bring down in a two-minute fight on the last day. With this he fulfilled the conditions for the appointment to the yokozuna and was raised on September 26, 2012 by the committee of the association to this rank.
2013 was a very successful year for Harumafuji. He won both the Hatsu Basho in January and the Kyushu Basho and did not suffer any make-koshi.
In 2014, Harumafuji had to cancel the Hatsu Basho due to an injury. He had to pause another 10 fights at the Aki Basho in September, but was able to achieve 2-digit victory balances at the other tournaments.
2015 saw light and shadow: While the first 3 tournaments could still be completed with 2-digit victory records, Harumafuji had to leave the tournament prematurely in July after only 2 fights due to an elbow injury and did not return in September due to an injury. But then he was able to win the November tournament.
2016 was another very successful year. All tournaments could be concluded with a positive victory record, he could win the July tournament in Nagoja.
2017 started with an injury in the middle of the January tournament in Tokyo. Pain in the leg led to Harumafuji giving up. The next 4 tournaments went very well, crowned by the tournament victory in September. It was his 9th and last tournament victory in the Makuuchi Division. After the 3rd day of the November tournament, he stopped playing and announced his resignation after the tournament.
At around 137 kg, Harumafuji was a below average sumo wrestler in the makuuchi division. He was very quick in the ring and a very good technician.
On November 13, 2017, Japanese newspapers reported that Harumafuji and Maegashira Takanoiwa had a physical altercation that led to his resignation on November 29, 2017.
