Hasan Ağa

Hasan Ağa was the keeper of the seal of the Grand Vizier Köprülü Fâzıl Ahmed Pascha and the author of the campaign diaries, which cover the Hungarian campaigns in 1663 and 1664.

life and work

He not only accompanied the two most important campaigns of his master, to Hungary and to Crete , but also wrote a complete diary about them. However, he did not publish his original text himself, but had it revised. The editor, whose identity has not been unequivocally clarified by literary studies to this day, gave the work the title "The gems of history" ( Cevâhirü't-tevârîh ). However, he used many place names, which Hasan Ağa had to be familiar with as a participant and issuer of the letters of protection, in some cases very badly and made spelling mistakes. Five manuscripts are currently used most for research purposes, but they also differ considerably in their spelling mistakes:

According to the introduction in the last manuscript, the anonymous editor was the imam of the sultan's mosque in the castle on the Ibar (in eastern Montenegro ). The translator Erich Prokosch used these manuscripts for his book listed in the bibliography.

“Our Lord Ahmed Pascha's sense of justice and the art of governance, prudence and prudence were well known and no one else was qualified to assume the office of Grand Vizier. The Austrian orientalist Joseph von Hammer-Purgstall used Hasan Ağa's diary for Volume VI of his work History of the Ottoman Empire and quoted it in detail.
