Hassi R'Mel is an Algerian desert town in the western Great Erg in Laghouat Province . It is the district capital. The oil field near the city is the largest in Africa and one of the largest gas fields in the world . In 2008 the city had 16,004 inhabitants, including the surrounding area 22,133 inhabitants.

Oil industry
The city is strongly tied to the Hassi-R'Mel oil field. Hassi R'Mel is located in the center of the oil field, which extends from here in about 70 km in north-south and 50 km in east-west direction. In 1956 the deposit was discovered by a French company and developed from 1961.
Hassi R'Mel is an important hub in the pipeline network between Africa and Europe: The place is the starting point of the Maghreb-Europe pipelines (via Morocco to Spain), Medgaz (to Spain), Transmed (via Tunisia to Italy) and GALSI (via Sardinia to Italy). Hassi R'Mel is also said to be the end point of the planned Trans-Sahara Pipeline (from Nigeria).

The city has an airport. The Hassi R'Mel Airport (IATA code: HRM) is 1.6 kilometers east of the center of Hassi R'Mel. The Algerian Tassili Airlines has its home airport here. It mainly offers domestic flights for the conveyor industry.
