In Palo Alto , at Stanford University , there has been the Hasso Plattner Institute of Design since October 3, 2005 . Scientists from various disciplines jointly develop user-friendly innovations at the facility previously known as “d.school”. The institute is headed by David Kelley , the founder of IDEO .

Founder Hasso Plattner provided the institute with 35 million US dollars. It belongs to the School of Engineering at Stanford University in Silicon Valley . The Potsdam Hasso Plattner Institute for Software System Technology with its HPI School of Design Thinking (active since the 2007/2008 winter semester) maintains a particularly close cooperation with its sister institute in Stanford.

In addition to the exchange of students and scientists, there is an annual workshop on Design Thinking in Germany. German companies are also involved in joint international development projects via the axis between Potsdam and Palo Alto. With the help of modern tele-teaching technology, the implementation of such projects on both sides of the Atlantic is made easier. There is also an exchange of teaching content and other materials.
