David Kelley (engineer)

David M. Kelley (* 1951 ) is a professor at Stanford University and founder and chairman of IDEO . Kelley is the eponym and one of the pioneers of the design thinking innovation method .

Work and creation

After graduating as an electrical engineer from Carnegie Mellon University , he worked for several years in the development departments of NCR and Boeing . After hearing about a new course in product design at Stanford University, he received his second degree there in 1978.

In 1978, Kelley founded his first company Hovey-Kelley together with Dean Hovey, which was later renamed David Kelley Design after Hovey's departure . There was u. a. the first computer mouse developed for Apple .

In 1991 he merged his company with two other design studios to form IDEO . At the same time he began teaching at Stanford in 1978 and became a full professor there in 1991. He is co-founder and director of d.school - the Hasso Plattner Institute of Design .

Awards and honors

On the occasion of Stanford's centenary, David Kelley was honored by the university for his “mixture of drive and unlimited imagination”. In 2000, Kelley received the Chrysler Design Award and was elected to the National Academy of Engineering . In 2001, Kelley and IDEO received the Smithsonian Institute's National Design Award. In 2002 he was appointed Donald W. Whittier Professor in Mechanical Engineering by Stanford. In 2009, Kelley received the Edison Achievement Award from Rutgers University , and in 2020 he was awarded the Bernard M. Gordon Prize .
