Hata Teruo ( Japanese 秦テルヲ , last name also Hada read first name with the same reading actually 輝男 written; born 20th March 1887 in Hiroshima ,. Died 25. December 1945 in Kyoto ) was a Japanese painter of the Kyoto School of Taisho and Shōwa time .

life and work

Hata lost his father at the age of 9, which led to difficult living conditions. Nevertheless, he graduated from the "Municipal School for Arts and Crafts" ( 京都 市立 美術 工 芸 学校 , Kyōto shiritsu bijutsu kōgei gakkō ) in Kyoto. At the beginning he painted the poor workers and their quarters in Kyoto and Kobe. In 1909 he joined the group of young artists who joined the "Heigo Group", in which he played an important role. When the "Black Cat Group" ( 黒 猫 会 , Kuroneko-kai ) Ono Chikkyō ( 小野 竹 喬 ; 1889–1979), Tsuchida Bakusen , Tsuda Seifū ( 津 田 青楓 ; 1880–1978) was founded the following year he is also a member there. However, after this group soon disbanded, Hata no longer joined any group. In 1913, Hata and Nonagase Banka (1889-1964) opened the “Banka Teruo Exhibition” in Kyoto in protest against the state art exhibition.

From 1914 Hata led an unsteady life, lived in Osaka, Kobe, Tokyo. However, when a child was born, he settled in the village of Kamo in Sōraku County , today a district of Kizugawa , in 1921 . He began to be interested in painters like Gaugin , gradually turning to religious subjects. In 1929 he moved to Kitashirakawa in the city of Kyoto. During the Pacific War he created small-format drawings with melancholy content.

Hata became known for his idiosyncratic mother-child pictures, landscapes and pictures with Buddhist content. He occupies an idiosyncratic position in the history of Nihonga painting.
