Hatanaka Kenji

Major Hatanaka Kenji ( Japanese 畑 中 健 二 ; * March 28, 1912 ; † August 15, 1945 ) was an officer in the Japanese Army in the Military Affairs Section of the Japanese Army Ministry at the end of World War II . He was one of the most responsible putschists who captured the imperial palace and the building of the imperial court office in order to prevent the broadcast of the surrender speech by Emperor Hirohito . Hatanaka had also tried to persuade General Mori Takeshi to join him - but to no avail. Hatanaka's men did not find the recording of the speech. Although the coup failed, the conspirators came dangerously close to prolonging the war. After the failure, Hatanaka shot Mori Takeshi and then himself.
