Hauck's house

The "Hauck'sche Haus" in Oberstrasse 12

The Hauck'sche Haus is a listed half-timbered house in Oberstraße  12 in the municipality of Eschelbronn in the Rhein-Neckar district . It was built in 1630 during the Thirty Years War and is the oldest existing building in the town. The name Hauck'sche Haus refers to the later owner and resident, the farmer Emil Hauck, whose family owned the house for several generations.

During the development from linen weaving to carpentry as the main source of income for the residents, it was, like almost all other half-timbered houses in Eschelbronn, plastered, which is why the half-timbering is no longer visible.

Event during the War of Liberation

In 1813 the house was the scene of an event about Emil Hauck's great-grandfather, which led to protests from Eschelbronn residents against the Russian occupiers during the wars of liberation .

That year Russian soldiers were billeted in private households on the march to France. When von Hauck soldiers who lived in the neighboring house were refused a requested delivery of spirits, one of them reacted by knocking over a pram with the child lying in it and hitting a table with his saber . So Hauck threw him down the front steps of the house. The act was understood as a resistance against the occupying power and Hauck was imprisoned in the old parsonage , which is currently the Russian commandant 's office. After the arrest, several residents gathered in front of the rectory and demanded Hauck's release. While the Russians were busy getting the demonstrators under control, Hauck managed to escape to a hiding place behind an elder bush in his garden, where he was initially housed for three days and then, until the detachment moved on after a few more days Darsbergwald fled.

The incident was seen in Eschelbronn as a key regional event for the occupation and the table with the notch was seen as a historical relic.

Others

In the Heimatbuch 1200 Jahre Eschelbronn , published in 1989 for the local anniversary , the year of construction of the house was incorrectly dated to 1638.

In 1997, a picture of the house served as the last motif of the Christmas mugs in the "Old Views" series, which have been produced annually for Advent singing since 1992. The year of construction of the building, incorrectly stated in the home register 1200 years Eschelbronn , was taken over when printing.
