Hauenstein (pass)
The Hauenstein describes two Jura pass crossings that lead from the Basel region to the Swiss plateau .
The Obere Hauenstein lies at 731 m above sea level. M. on the municipality of Langenbruck between the villages of Waldenburg and Balsthal on the main road No. 12 on the route between Basel and Solothurn . This route already formed a main road in the Roman Empire , which led from the Lake Geneva area to the Rhine . ( Location )
The Lower Hauenstein is 698 m above sea level. M. and forms the border between the municipalities of Läufelfingen and Hauenstein , on the main road No. 2 between Sissach and Olten on the route between Basel and Olten. Before the opening of the A2 Belchen tunnel , it was one of the most important Jura passes in north-south traffic. ( Location )
Both road trains run near the mountain passes through deep into the limestone rock hewn ravines . The street name is derived from these construction measures from an indefinite period in the Middle Ages .
