Eiríksstaðir open air museum

In the southern Haukadalur, east of the lake Haukadalsvatn , there was probably the court of the Viking Erik the Red (Isl. Eirik Rauður ), who founded the Viking settlements in Greenland . The presumed discoverer of America, Leifur Eiríksson, was born here.

Here you can find an open-air museum about Erik the Red on the presumed grounds of his former farm. A reconstructed long house in the style of the Viking Age (cf. Stöng ) invites you to visit, in summer with people in Viking costumes.

traffic

A rough jeep track leads from the inside of the valley over the mountains, where it meets the Hringvegur on the Holtavörðuheiði .
