The building of the former main customs office

The former main customs office building is a building in Passau . In the mainly baroque old town of Passau there are only a few buildings from the 19th century. The building of the former main customs office on Rathausplatz is the most important of these.

history

In 1425 the municipal dance house was built here, where all the dance events in the episcopal city took place. Due to the secularization in Bavaria , the building came into the possession of the royal customs administration in 1803.

New building

In 1845 it was decided to build a new building. The design by civil building inspector Joseph Schmidtner from Landshut was approved by King Ludwig I and the Passau building designer Georg Nadler was entrusted with the management of the new building. Due to serious differences in the cost planning, a new draft was created and the cost estimate now amounted to 101,109 guilders.

In 1848 the basic excavation began after the old building was demolished. When the district building officer Bernatz, who was entrusted with the building supervision, criticized Nadler, he initially received backing from the top building authority despite the building costs being exceeded. It was only when Bernatz submitted a much cheaper estimate for the foundation work that he was entrusted with it and Nadler dismissed.

The Munich architect Anton Harrer, who was born in Landshut, was chosen for the building construction at Bernatz's suggestion . He had worked as a draftsman and site manager for the building of the Bavarian State Library and for the building of the Wittelsbacher Palais for the famous Friedrich von Gärtner .

The new building was erected in August 1851 at a cost of 103,000 guilders. In 1983, Michael Stöhr from Passau determined in a building study for the University of Stuttgart that the author of the final building plan cannot be proven. Friedrich von Gärtner or even Leo von Klenze are believed to be the builder, but the circumstances also make Harrer probable.

21st century

At the end of April 30, 2004, the main customs office in Passau was abolished. In June 2007, the city of Passau acquired the building, which belongs to the listed ensemble of Rathausplatz, from the federal government for 1.2 million euros. Since October 2007, the brick building has been used by the City of Passau as the town hall old customs house.
