Home and family carers is a recognized training or further education occupation in the social field, which includes the care and support of households .

The activities include the independent and responsible representation, support or guidance of the person responsible for the household in household , educational or nursing areas. As a training occupation, home and family care is regulated by state law in Germany . The training takes place at vocational schools , usually lasts three years and ends with a state examination.

The profession can also be learned through further training and is subject to similar requirements as the form of training. The advanced training takes place at technical schools and can last between two and three and a half years. It can take place full-time or part-time and also ends with a state examination.

Job description and tasks

Family and house carers are used as representatives of the absent or sick housewife or the household manager in the urban family household . In rural areas, the assumption of specific tasks in the agricultural household and operation can be part of the tasks.

Their tasks in detail can include planning and running the household, preparing meals, tidying up and cleaning the apartment, washing and looking after the laundry, looking after and supervising children or instructing and advising the household owner on obtaining or regaining household management skills.

Further tasks are in the area of ​​coordination, such as making arrangements with doctors , physiotherapists , schools and kindergartens. In the nursing area, the care of babies and mothers as well as the care of people with disabilities can be part of the tasks.

The exercise of the professional activity is tied to the completion of a corresponding training or further education and the passed state final examination. It is to be applied for from the competent state authority. For activities with minors, an extended certificate of good conduct may also be required.

House and family helpers find employment with charities , in social stations or with outpatient family care services, as well as in facilities for the elderly and the disabled and in private households. Self-employment is also possible.

Requirements for use

In most cases, family care includes temporary household help for families and partnerships with children. The prerequisites for this are given in the event of a serious illness or hospitalization of the household manager, in the event of physical, psychological or social overload , for example due to emergency situations with single parents , after multiple births or due to the special burdens or difficulties that arise from caring for disabled children.

The financing is usually provided by the health insurances, as well as the pension insurance or youth welfare. Legal bases in Germany are u. a. § 38, § 195 and 199 SGB , § 20 KJHG / SGB and § 70 BSHG .
