The house Bergstraße 62 is a residential building in the Belgian city of Eupen . The simple workers' house in Berggässchen was built in 1720 and has been protected as a cultural monument since May 26, 2005 . On July 19, 2013, the decree of 2005 was amended to include the house with the surrounding buildings and rear buildings, the buildings at the beginning of Neustraße and house facades on Straße Am Berg in a “protected area”.

The building still serves as a residential building today.

location

The house with its listed east facade is located on a very narrow and steep part of the old mountain road, which is now signposted as Berggässchen . Until 1860 it was the only road between the upper and lower town. Today the Bergstrasse leads past the west facade of the house.

The south adjoining house of about the same age has been a listed building since 1986.

description

The two-storey, "modest workers' house" was built from blue and quarry stone . The painted facade has three symmetrical axes. The rectangular windows have a thin drapery, their former division and the shops no longer exist. The wall anchors have volutes and are painted black. The entrance shows a straight lintel, this and the posts are chamfered . In the lintel, the initials and the date "IHCR 1720" are affixed in a coat of arms in bas relief. An oval located above the lintel bull's-eye under a finely crafted shell niche with the inscription in capital letters with small caps: "O • Stella Maris • • / • Avxillare nobis". The material is the customary bluestone. The figure of the saint has been removed. At the border to the neighboring house number 64 there is a Christ on the cross under a weather canopy. The base is a large-format, chamfered bluestone block.

The facade was later extended to the north by a very narrow two-axle house.

The gable roof is covered with tiles. The rear facade in sandstone and bluestone facing the new, lower-lying mountain road shows three storeys. The door and a window opening in the basement are bricked up. The half-height cellar hatch is the only remaining entrance. There were six bluestone windows, coupled in pairs, on the middle floor. Their robes are made up of different parts and are chamfered. After enlarging the windows, the lintels and sills were clamped with iron. The wall anchors are S-shaped. The two windows on the upper floor have a newer bluestone border. Their stores no longer exist either.
