House of Hepburn

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The House of Hepburn is a family of Scottish nobility best known by the Earl of Bothwell and among them James Hepburn, 4th Earl of Bothwell , the murderer of Henry Stewart, Lord Darnley and his successor as husband Maria Stuart .

The family seems to come from the north of England, based on the places Hebron and Hebburn , both of which are in Northumberland . There is also a medieval tower house near Chillingham Castle in Chillingham , also Northumberland, which was the seat of a branch of the family until it died out in the 18th century.

The Earls of Bothwell lineage was wealthy in Lothian before receiving the title of Lord of Hailes and later that of Earl of Bothwell.
