The Koban house is a building in Darmstadt .
History and description
The private house of the Darmstadt architect Wilhelm Koban was built in 1926 and is a design by the planner himself. The Koban house is a good example of an expressionistically designed functional house made of clinker bricks .
Notable details include:
- The house has three floors on the north side .
- The house has two floors on the south side .
- The roof terrace is cut into the cube and set off with round arches .
- The relief on the south side by Elisabeth Westermann-Pfähler.
Typical of "clinker expressionism" is the processing of the dark clinker stone, in elaborate patterns, on the windows and on the parapets . The projections and recesses in the masonry bond and the different color nuances are also part of the design.
The architecture of his private house attracted a lot of attention in Darmstadt - but Koban did not find any imitators at the time. Most of Koban's designs at the time are more traditional and less consistent; even if it is clearly expressionistic.
