Wilhelm Koban (born October 2, 1885 in Mörfelden ; † May 14, 1961 ) was a German architect .

Life

Koban initially studied at the Darmstadt State Building Trade School . He later switched to Friedrich Pützer at the Technical University of Darmstadt . Koban's specialties were "stately single-family houses" and "director's villas".

Between 1908 and 1936 Wilhelm Koban supervised the construction of 36 houses in Darmstadt, Eberstadt and the surrounding area. For HEAG director Gustav Brandis, he designed a villa in Voglerweg 5 in Darmstadt in 1924. The Stegmüller office building in Darmstadt was also planned and executed by Koban in 1932; In 1944 it was destroyed in a bombing raid.

In Buchschlag he planned a total of 15 large single-family houses between 1908 and 1933. At the same time, 14 medium-sized to larger residential buildings were built in Frankfurt am Main and the surrounding area. Three of his numerous designs for “noble living” were awarded a prize in Berlin in 1910.

During the time of National Socialism Wilhelm Koban was not allowed to work as an architect between 1936 and 1945 because he was a communist . After the end of the Second World War, Koban was actively involved in the reconstruction. He planned single-family and commercial buildings in Darmstadt and Groß-Gerau . From 1946 he was a member of the Darmstadt Secession Artists' Association . In 1950, Wilhelm Koban dictated to his second wife a not entirely complete list of all his buildings, which can now be viewed in the Darmstadt City Archives.

The most important of his works is his own house, the Koban house at Richard-Wagner-Weg 28 in Darmstadt, which was built in 1926/1927. The cubist , expressionist clinker brick building was the first private single-family house in Darmstadt with a flat roof . The sparse and austere looking cube has a very individual appearance. A large wall relief , created by the sculptor Elisabeth Westermann Pfähler, gives the clinker brick building a very special touch.
