location

Architecture and history

The four-storey brick building was built in 1893 for the master bricklayer Fritz Mertens in the northern neo-renaissance style. The name Haus Mertens goes back to Mertens and is used in the same way for the formerly neighboring building Lüneburger Straße 22.

The facade of the representatively designed building is structured by narrow, horizontal plaster strips. On the second and third floors there are two flat, profiled blind arcades that span two window axes. The spandrels below the round arches house two helmeted and wreathed head busts. One of the busts represents a female head, the other a male head. On the third floor there are stucco reliefs in the parapet area . They depict winged, helmeted beings as well as heraldic fields and banners. The ground floor is completely plastered.

In the middle of the street is a flat risalit , in front of whose facade a polygonal bay window is arranged on the first and second floors . Two caryatids - herms - can be found here as decorations . Above the bay there is a large roof bay on the roof . A square with a compass is shown in its gable.

In the local register of monuments , the building is recorded as a residential and commercial building under registration number 094 16815.
