The Council of Religions in Hanover , also known as the House of Religions , is the organization that runs the House of Religions , the venue of the same name, in the capital of Lower Saxony. Since the German Evangelical Church Congress in 2005, the building has been located in the former Athanasius Church of the Südstadt parish in Hanover. The organization “Haus der Religionen Hannover eV” is the sponsor. It was founded on December 2, 2008 by committed people from seven religions ( Baha'i , Buddhism , Christianity , Hinduism , Islam and Judaism ) with the aim of “the conversation and exchange between to promote the religions in Hanover ”.

The establishment of the House of Religions in its current form in 2005 had several years in advance, which lasted until the beginning of the 1990s. During the second Gulf War, people came together in Hanover in 1991 for an inter-religious discussion and prayer group.

The assassination attempt in Solingen on May 29, 1993 was the reason for the formation of the “Action Group of Religions and Cultures” by its co-founder and first chairman (1993–1998) Hans Werner Dannowski . In 1995 the Hanover regional group of the “World Conference of Religions for Peace” (WCRP) was founded.

During EXPO 2000 the “Religions Meeting Point” took place in the rooms of the Reformed Church on Waterlooplatz and in 2002 in the school on Hohen Ufer in Hanover under the patronage of Mayor Herbert Schmalstieg .

During the 30th German Evangelical Church Congress in 2005, the "House of Religions" was established in the rooms of the Athanasius parish. The exhibition "Religions in Dialogue" was opened here in 2007.

To found the association “House of Religions Hannover e. V. ”it finally came in 2008.

The House of Religions is the first project of its kind in Germany. It is directed by the Council of Religions of the City of Hanover. The House of Religions was awarded the Integration Prize of the City of Hanover and the Peace Prize of the German Islam Archive.

The House of Religions is a venue for all kinds of interreligious encounters. It is an interreligious place of learning for children, adolescents and adults, for school classes from Grade 4 to Abitur and vocational school, for confirmation groups, for the citizens of the city and region of Hanover.
