The house for patience is a baroque secular building in Winterthur in the canton of Zurich in Switzerland . It is considered "the most important work of the late 17th century in Winterthur" and is one of the few old town buildings in Winterthur with a natural stone facade. The building is classified as a cultural asset of regional importance and is a listed building .
history
The house was first mentioned in 1448. The front building at today's Marktgasse 22 was rebuilt in the 17th century. Towards the end of the same century, the property was transferred to the iron merchant and city judge Hans Ulrich Biedermann, who rebuilt the rear building at today's Stadthausstrasse 59 in 1717, using stones from the former Beerenberg monastery near Wülflingen . As a result, the building remained in the possession of the family until the beginning of the 20th century, who carried out further alterations during this time. In 1919 the art collector and patron Oskar Reinhart bought the building. He intended to found a gentlemen's club based on the English model in Winterthur , for which he needed a corresponding clubhouse. Reinhart subsequently had the house rebuilt and decorated accordingly by the architects Robert Rittmeyer and Walter Furrer as well as the artists Henry Bischoff and Karl Walser . During this redesign, new club rooms with a bar, reading and bridge room as well as dining and lecture hall were created, but the old furnishings were also partially included.
Todays use
The House of Patience has been owned by the Patience Club, which was named after him and was founded in 1922, since 1995 and is still used by them as a clubhouse. The members meet there for the purpose of “cultivating relationships and business” for meals and for various other occasions.
