The 13th stage of the Tour de France 2016 was a 37.5-kilometer individual time trial that was held on July 15, 2016. It led from Bourg-Saint-Andéol to La Caverne du Pont-d'Arc . There were three split times after 7, 17.5 and 28 kilometers.

Race course

The racing drivers started the first individual time trial of the Tour de France 2016 in the reverse order of their placement in the overall standings. Sam Bennett (BOA) was classified in last place after the 12th stage and thus started. The Australian Rohan Dennis (BMC) set the first long-standing best times. The reigning time trial world champion Wassil Kiryjenka (SKY) could not match Dennis' time and was almost six minutes behind him. Ex-time trial world champion Fabian Cancellara (TFS) also did not achieve a top position.

The Portuguese Nélson Oliveira was the first to beat Rohan Dennis' time by ten seconds. Also Jérôme Coppel came into the area of Dennis and Oliveira, he finally sorted, four seconds behind the Portuguese on the provisional second rank. Tony Martin (EQS), also a former world time trial champion, crossed the finish line fifth fastest, behind Ion Izagirre (MOV).

Tom Dumoulin (TGA) then distanced Oliveira by 15 seconds at the first intermediate time, by 30 seconds at the second and by 56 seconds at the third intermediate time and took the lead in the time trial with a lead of 1:31 minutes. Nobody could take the first place away from him. Geraint Thomas (SKY), Bauke Mollema (TFS) and Tejay van Garderen (BMC) were able to finish in the top ten of the day's rankings, while overall leader and time trial leader Chris Froome (SKY) who started last came 1:03 minutes behind Dumoulin two.

For Tom Dumoulin it was the second Tour stage win in 2016, after he had already won the 9th stage in Andorra. Chris Froome was able to further distance his pursuers in the overall standings. He was now 1:47 minutes ahead of Bauke Mollema and 2:45 minutes over Adam Yates (OBE). Nairo Quintana (MOV) was fourth with 2:59 minutes.
