Hauwa Ibrahim
Hauwa Ibrahim (* 1968 in Nigeria ) is a Nigerian lawyer and human rights activist .
Life
The daughter of an Islamic mullah was supposed to drop out of school at the age of twelve and get married. She defied her family's wishes and studied law. She then worked until 1996 in the Justice Department of the State of Bauchi in Northern Nigeria. The introduction of the Shari'a in the northern provinces of Nigeria in 1999 led her to work as a defender. She took on numerous pro bono mandates for people who were threatened with the hadd sentence , which earned her international fame. Among other things, she successfully defended Amina Lawal and Safiya Hussaini .

- 2005: Knight of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic
- 2005: Sakharov Prize of the European Parliament
- 2006: Honorary Citizen of the City of Paris
- 2006/2007: Visiting professor at the Saint Louis University School of Law
- 2010: Honorary doctorate from the University of Oldenburg
