The millerbird ( acrocephalus familiaris ), and South warbler called, is a bird art from the kind of warbler . The critically endangered Nihoa reed warbler , found on the Hawaiian island of Nihoa , and the Laysan reed warbler , which became extinct between 1916 and 1923, are subspecies of the Hawaiian reed warbler. It is the only representative of the reed warbler species that has colonized the Hawaiian islands, but there is no fossil evidence to show that the Hawaiian reed warbler also existed outside of Laysan and Nihoa.

Hawaiian reed warblers form long-term pair bonds and defend their territories for many years. The breeding grounds can be up to 0.95 hectares in size, but territory sizes between 0.19 and 0.40 hectares are common. Breeding takes place between January and September and is dependent on the food supply.

Systematics

Two subspecies of the Hawaiian reed warbler have been described:

Danger

The Nihoa subspecies of the Hawaiian reed warbler is classified as Critically Endangered (CR) by the IUCN because it only occurs on an extremely small island and the population fluctuates greatly due to climatic events. The release of a predatory animal species or the introduction of non-native plants or insects could also cause the second subspecies - and thus the species - to become extinct.
