Haydé (actually: Haydé Ardalan; * 1956 in Cologne ) is a children's book author, comic artist and illustrator who is particularly successful with the figure she created of the cat Milton .

Life & Work

Haydé Ardalan was born in Cologne in 1956 into an Iranian diplomatic family. From 1978 she completed a graphic design degree at the Ecole d'Art visuel in Lausanne and worked as an assistant and employee for a graphic designer. She also worked for ten years as an illustrator for the former Swiss weekly newspaper L'Hebdo . She has also been the designer of the posters for the Petit Théâtre de Lausanne for many years and works for the Lausanne city council in the field of children and public health.

In 1997 she developed the comic figure Milton - based on the model of her own cat and as a homage to the American graphic designer Milton Glaser - and published the first children's album with Edition Joie de lire, entitled Moi, Milton (Eng. Permit, Milton). Milton is a black and white city cat "who is not like other cats". The albums became an instant hit with audiences, translated into numerous languages (including Spanish, Japanese, and Dutch) and awarded literary prizes.

More titles followed by 2003, a total of six, before Haydé's work stalled: first her parents died in Tehran , then her editor Anne Salem-Marin at Joie de lire , and finally she also had to accept the death of her original Milton, who was 17 years old had become.

It wasn't until 2010 that Haydé came out again with a - stylistically completely different - Milton album: completely in black and white, as a comic with individual panels under the title La fugue de Milton, in which she tells a runaway story with Milton. She had started the album together with Salem-Marin, but was unable to complete and release it for years.
